RAEM – DREAM BLINKERS (ONIROU PAROPIDES) (EP-2016)

Something different from the music genres of this blog, the new EP (and first solo effort) of Raem from Drama has just been released online!

(Due to my friendship with Raem, as well as my participation in the creation of this EP, this review is rather descriptive than a critique.)

This EP consists of five tracks-time travel to the Golden Age of the Greek old school rap, as it is easily noticed thanks to the evident influence by music groups of that time like Paremvoles, Terror X Crew, FFC, Deadlock etc., which we still miss and whose absence is still felt. The title of the opening track of this EP is “Alitechniki Fleva” (“Streetartistic Vein”) with melodic rhythm, while the first flows warn us of what is going to come next and generally of what we are dealing with. Then, to my mind, comes the strongest point of this EP (for which a video clip was created that has recently been released and has already received positive feedback), the track titled “Egkiklopedia” (“Encyclopedia”). “Encyclopedia” constitutes a “hymn-call for uprising” to all writers everywhere and since its subject field is graffiti and due to the general trend I ventured to name it “Doulies me mpogies vol.2” (“Hands full with spray painting vol.2”).
In the title song of this EP, “Onirou Paropides” (“Dream Blinkers”), we are dealing with an old school positive attitude-flavored track (related to the RUN DMC age you might say, a sense which is also mirrored in the guitar sound) that, in my opinion, features the overall mood-attitude of the album and generally of Raem.
Next, “Tremokratia” (“Media Terrorism”), totally up to date with the political news of our country, adds a sense of rage to the album by directly attacking the Fourth Estate, while music-wise the rapcore style of the track refers to Deadlock-“Telos Ipanthropon” (“End of Subhumans”)/”I Genesis” (“The Genesis”) or even to the first album of Terror X Crew.
Finally, this EP ends with an amazing European-wide collaboration with Merax (Paris) and Yano (Berlin), produced by Billy Le Boiteux.

This EP will be available on CD including a booklet within a month so stay tuned and check out the official page of Raem until further notice. Show your support if you think it is worth doing so (as we all –musicians- know that such efforts are EXTREMELY costly).

New "Must-be-checked" Underground Releases

Bat Signal -S/T demo 2014

A new release by a new 3 piece from Thessaloniki, by the name of Bat Signal. In this 4-track demo you can find many 70s American punk rock influences from bands like The Ramones and The Misfits meeting the subsequent albums of Social distortion mixed with some classic pop and rock elements ending up to a perfect balance between melody and heavy-ness. This gives the band’s music a rare quality of variety, that makes it all the more exciting .Although the band named this release a "demo", the sound is very well produced and I would more likely call it an EP. The lyrical themes of the band are mostly personal, with many movie and pop culture references. The demo includes a cover from The robin hood anime theme which ends the album with a happy blast from the childhood past.
Highlights : Back to my home (with an amazing Western feeling of Morricone's melodies in the intro)

                    Kamikazi-Bastard Sounds (Ep-Cassette)

One of the best underground releases I have listened in the last years. Kamikazi from Thessaloniki is a speed rock n roll band simple, dirty and perfect. Punky r n' r, born by Motorhead, sealed by Zeke, 5 tracks of short (as it should be) songs, fast and loud guitars, imposing gang vocals, badass lead guitars and vocals. It did not feel strange at all when I heard that the cassette was sold out in just a FEW days! The cassette is decorated by cool artwork together with a button and a sticker from the band (in a low price).Hope to listen and see more releases like this from the band in the near future.

Highlights : Outcast main riff , Down by the city powerfull chorus (and also the "fan-made" videos for the songs that you can find on youtube with scenes of the 80s greek movie "Η κόντρα" and 70s movie "Le Casse" respectively.)

Raw poison is an one man band from Athens formed by Nikk(previous project Skullface) in 2012.This ΕP that has already gotten the attention of the underground metal scene consists of 4 tracks in a classic 80s mixed style of NWOBHM, punk and thrash. The EP comes along with amazing layouts and designs made by Nikk and a sticker. It has been self released by Nikk in cassette form and in next month it will be released by Weird Face Productions as a 7inch vinyl. A MUST-be-checked project for fans of Venom,(old Bathory, Motorhead, Midnight etc. Stay tuned cause the have some upcoming split releases too!

Human Slaughter-Terror State/Injustice Squad-Silence is Crime
(7" Split EP)

Another Weird Face Productions upcoming release, a split 7" this time consists of Thessaloniki's Thrashcore band Human Slaughter and Athens’ Hardcore band Injustice Squad.
Human Slaughter, after some lineup changes, comes with better sound and ideas than ever and give us 3 tracks of thrashy hardcore (one of them with greek lyrics) influenced by D-beat punk, American thrash (of Nuclear Assault) and 80s hardcore.
In the Injustice Squad's side you can find 4 tracks of Old school hardcore of Cro mags, old Suicidal Tendencies etc influenced by classic punk like Gbh and crossover/thrash. Also I'd like to mention that the line up consists from members of Mortal Threat, Antidrasi and Mentally Defiled and they make killer live shows so don't miss them if they play somewhere near to your place!

Highlights :Human Slaughter-There's no tommorow,Injustice Squad-Fightback (Cro Mag Madness!)

Could Be Worse - Full Rehearsal Demos

Could Be Worse was a crossover/hardcore band from Serres,Greece during the late 80s and they  played several gigs in cities of North Greece.
(More infos about the band and their releases : http://www.anexartisi.gr/couldbw/couldbw.htm )

This material is from a rehearsal tape from the late 80s that felt in my hands. If I separated the tracks correctly, during the ripping, there are 14 tracks. It's possible that the 6 tracks from Uncontrolled Situations demo (1988) are among these 14 tracks, but since it was really difficult to match the songs with possible names that I found on the internet I left them untitled

                                                                             Download

Big thanks to Petros/Istories/Raemis for all his help with the ripping.
